Things to Do: further afield

The West Midlands isn't just about Birmingham! There are a range of great places to visit and attractions within easy reach...

  • Stratford-Upon-Avon

The birth place of possibly the West Midlands most famous export - Shakespeare.

Stratford is a charming market town which is a pleasure to visit. Many of the original houses from Shakespeare's time are still in excellent condition, and are being preserved by the Shakespeare organisation. Booking in advance is recommended to see the Royal Shakespeare Company perform some of the worlds greatest plays in one of their 3 theatres.

Stratford-Upon-Avon is easy to get to from Atholl Lodge by car or by rail and is a must-visit day out for all first time visitors to the West Midlands.

  • Warwick & Warwick Castle

Historic Warwick is a delightful town with a bustling market square and plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops to browse.

The castle itself is set within the town and is a great family day out with regular jousting, re-enactments and Mediaeval fun. Admission charges apply.

Things to Do: further afield

  • Royal Leamington Spa

Royal Leamington Spa is an elegant town boasting Georgian and Victorian architecture, tree-lined avenues and pretty gardens.

The Royal Pump Rooms are now a cultural complex. Should you wish to and dare, there is the opportunity to sample the famed medicinal waters that gave Leamington its Royal Spa status.

  • Kennilworth Castle

Set in the pretty village of Kenilworth amongst rolling hills, Kenilworth Castle is one of Britain's finest castle ruins and is intimately linked with some of the most important names in English history, as well as being the setting for Sir Walter Scott's novel "Kenilworth. A Romance".

  • Black Country Living Museum

An open-air urban heritage park where historic buildings from all over the Black Country have been moved and rebuilt to create a tribute to the people who once lived and worked in the heart of Industrial Britain. Electric trams and trolleybuses transport you into the village which features houses, shops (including a traditional pub, chippie and a sweet shop) and public buildings staffed by people in period costume.

Things to Do: further afield

  • West Midlands Safari Park

Home to white lions, chimpanzees, zebras, tigers and more, the Safari Park covers almost 200 acres with a 4 mile self-drive safari experience, rides and shows. A great day out for the family - admission charges apply.

  • Severn Valley Railway

Step back in time with a trip on a chuffa train through beautiful West Midlands countryside (from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster). A hop-on hop-off ticket is great value for exploring all the towns along the route.
